In this tutorial, we will show you how to setup OpenVPN VPN on any ASUS WRT-MERLIN router via simple and very easy steps. As a result, your network will be both secure and private. In addition, you will have the ability to bypass any geo-restrictions and get access to geo-blocked content on the internet.
Set Things Up
Before configuring OpenVPN on your ASUS WRT-MERLIN router, first you will need to set things up:
1- You need an internet connection that works properly.
2- Make sure that your ASUS WRT-MERLIN router supports OpenVPN protocol.
3- Make sure that your VPN service subscription is active (e.g: bVPN).
Access Your ASUS WRT-MERLIN Router
Next, you need to access your ASUS WRT-MERLIN router’s homepage to be able to start your configuration process by following these steps:
1- Connect to the internet, and then launch your web browser.
2- Enter your router’s IP address in order to access the admin’s web page.
3- Now, type in your router’s username and password.
Configure OpenVPN on ASUS WRT-MERLIN Router
Now that you have accessed your ASUS WRT-MERLIN router’s admin page, let’s start our OpenVPN configuration process. All you need to do is to follow these steps:
1- On the left side of the main window, click on the VPN tab.
2- Next, click on OpenVPN Clients tab.
3- Now you need to download your OpenVPN configuration files, and then to your router’s control panel to click on the Browse button.
4- Choose the configuration file you want noting that each file stands for a server. Click on Open.
5- Next, click on the Upload button and wait for a few moments. The page will refresh automatically.
6- When the page is refreshed, you will only need to provide your VPN credentials (username and password) as other fields will be filled with the correct information automatically.
7- If you want to use your VPN on all devices connected to your home network, you can set the Accept DNS Configuration option to Strict.
8- If you want to use your VPN on certain devices connected to your home network, you can set the Accept DNS Configuration option to Exclusive.
9- Type the following command in the Custom Configuration field:
- remote-cert-tls server
- remote-random
- nobind
- tun-mtu 1500
- tun-mtu-extra 32
- mssfix 1450
- persist-key
- persist-tun
- ping-timer-rem
- reneg-sec 0
- # log /tmp/vpn.log
10- Hit the Apply button located at the bottom of the page. You would know that you are connected when the ON button turns green. You can verify your VPN IP address by returning to the VPN Status page or by checking your IP address at http://www.whatsmyip.org/.
