Trend Micro was founded back in 1989 in Los Angeles. Today it is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and is a multinational company specializing in IT security software. The most common of which is the antivirus or the firewall. However, when you have such a powerful firewall it’s difficult to have any other security measure such as a virtual private network or a VPN since the Trend Micro firewall will automatically treat the VPN as a threat and prevent it from operating properly. For that reason, in order to use both the Trend Micro firewall and your VPN, you have to readjust the rules within the Trend Micro firewall to allow your VPN through it. There is a way to establish that without the need to either completely disable the firewall or disable the VPN connection.In this tutorial we will be doing exactly that. We will show you, step-by-step, how to add an exception rule in your Trend Micro firewall in order to allow the VPN application through it, hence having it operating normally without increasing the risk on your device.
Adding a VPN Exception to Trend Micro Firewall
1- Open the Trend Micro main window
2- From the panel on the left side of the window, select “Personal Firewall Controls”
3- Under “Personal Firewall”, click on “Settings”
4- In the section labeled “Security Level of Firewall Profile”, click on “Advanced Settings”
5- From the tabs at the top of the window, click to open the tab labeled “Program Control”
6- Click on “Add”
7- Click on “Browse”
8- Browse through your computer files to get the file of the VPN application (depending on where in your computer you saved it when you downloaded it and installed it)
9- Select your VPN application and click on “Open”
10- From the 3 radio buttons labeled “Firewall Response” select the radio button labeled “Allow”
11- At the bottom of the window, click on “OK”
At this point you have added an exception rule to your Trend Micro firewall for your VPN application to prevent any conflicts such as your Trend Micro firewall treating the VPN application as a threat and blocking it.
