Recently the Egyptian government has been banning one VOIP service after the other. The most recent restriction was that made on the popular VOIP service, Skype. Skype allows users to make voice calls, video calls and send and receive texts online. It is an application that is available on multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, etc.). Today, in Egypt, Skype users are unable to make any Skype calls but are still able to use the application’s text service. The reason for this ban was not very clear and it caused a massive inconvenience among all Skype users, whether individuals or businesses. Individuals relied greatly on the Skype application to make calls to their friends and families outside of the country as it is extremely costly to make international calls using the normal mobile services. For businesses, Skype calls are used when needing to make overseas interviews with new joining candidates and conducting overseas meetings with clients and other branches around the world. There are several other purposes for this service as well. This is why the Skype calls service is becoming more important each day.
The best way to resolve this issue and bypass these restrictions is to use a reliable VPN. The main idea of a VPN service is that it allows the user to connect to a server, which is operated by the VPN provider, outside of the country with the restriction, hence bypassing this restriction. In this tutorial we will go through the very simple steps on how to unblock Skype calls using a VPN. In this example we will be using BVPN as our VPN service as it is one of the strongest VPNs in the market when it comes to online security and bypassing capabilities. We will be using Windows 7 as our operating platform.
How to Unblock Skype calls using BVPN
1- Go to the BVPN website and follow the procedures of signing up for an account and downloading the application
2- Open the BVPN application
3- Sign in using your BVPN credentials (username/email and password)
4- Select a server. It is recommended to choose the “Fastest Server” option. Click on “Connect“.
5- Once the BVPN connection is established, open Skype.
6- Sign in using your Skype credentials
7- Start the Skype call with your desired contact normally
Conclusion
This is not the first time Egypt bans a VOIP service or online services or websites in general and it won’t be the last. The reason for these bans until this moment are not fully clear, but thanks to VPNs we are now able to overcome these restrictions and enjoy our full online freedom which is the least of our rights. The above steps can be used for any online service that has been banned in Egypt. As long as you are connected to a VPN server outside of Egypt, then no online restrictions placed by the Egyptian government will be an issue.
