Point-to-Point-Tunneling-Protocol or PPTP is one of the security protocols used to secure VPN connections which is used by many VPN providers. Even though, recently, it has not become one of the most secure or recommended protocols in the field of online security, yet some users still prefer using it. This is why many VPN providers still offer it as one of the multiple security protocols supported. Now many VPN providers offer their users the option to connect to more than one device simultaneously. In this case if the user wants to connect to a VPN server through the PPTP protocol, they do not have to download and install the VPN application on each and every device they use. They can simply setup the PPTP connection manually on the device. In order to be able to go through these steps, you have to make sure that your VPN service supports PPTP. In this tutorial we will show you, step-by-step, how to manually configure a PPTP connection on Windows 10.
1- In the taskbar, click to open the start menu
2- On the left side of the start menu click on the settings icon
3- On the main settings page click on “Network and Internet”
4- In the panel on the left side of the “Network and Internet” page, click on “VPN”
5- At the top of the page, Click on “Add a VPN Connection”
6- On the “Add a VPN Connection” page, click to open the first drop-down menu labeled “VPN provider” and select “Windows (built-in)”
7- In the field labeled “Connection Name”, type in the name of your VPN provider, the preferred name you want to give to this connection, or the name preferred by the VPN provider (on their website)
8- In the field labeled “Server name or address” type in either the IP address of the server you want to connect to or the name of the server (you will find this on in the website of the VPN provider and you must make sure that this server supports PPTP)
9- Click to open the drop-down menu labeled “VPN Type” and select “Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)”
10- Click to open the drop-down menu labeled “Type of Sign-In Info” and select “Username and password”
11- In the “Username” and “Password” fields, type in your VPN credentials (These are the credentials used to sign in to your VPN account)
12- If you do not want to be asked to enter these credentials every time you connect to the VPN server, click on the checkbox labeled “Remember my sign-in info”
13- Click on “Save”
14- Back on the VPN page, select the connection name you just created and click on “Connect”
15- If you have entered your VPN credentials and clicked to check the “Remember My Sign-In Info” checkbox in step 12 then it will connect automatically to the PPTP connection, but if you didn’t enter your credentials, you will be asked to enter it at this point in order to connect.
As we have mentioned above, we would not recommend connecting using PPTP as it has become a compromised security protocol yet still some users prefer to connect to it over other protocols and for that reason we have provided you with this tutorial. You can connect through a PPTP connection either through the VPN application itself or manually through the above configuration steps.
